JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Acevedo lab is looking for a motivated person to fill a full-time Research Technologist position in the Department of Entomology at The Pennsylvania State Universit (https://psu.edu) y.

The successful candidate will provide support to research programs that study interactions between insects and plants with a focus on insects associated with grapevines, especially the Spotted Lanternfly. Research will be conducted in field and laboratory conditions and commitment to work in both environments and frequent travel within the state is expected.

Primary duties include:

  • Maintain grapevines used for research experiments.

  • Collect wild spotted lanternfly living stages and transfer them to established grapevines.

  • Set up research experiments and accurately collect data from field and laboratory conditions.

  • Oversee the activities of seasonal and part-time wage staff and students.

  • Instruct others in the use of research protocols and instrumentation.

  • Interact with faculty, staff, graduate students, and farmers.

  • Make sure equipment is operationally functional to perform accurate research data collection and instruct others in the use of research protocols and instrumentation.

  • Collect plant and insect samples for laboratory analyses and help perform analyses to assess the effect of lanternflies on juice and wine chemistry.

  • Digitalize data from experiments and help prepare written reports.

  • Assist with purchases of materials required for experiments.

Outreach activities will include contributing to original content to engage audiences through electronic extension publications in addition to traditional publications and in-person presentations. This position will require occasional to frequent workdays exceeding 8 hours during the summer but will rarely exceed 40 hours per week. This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility of extension depending on performance and availability of funds.

Education and Experience:

This job will be filled as a non-exempt Research Technologist - Life Sciences - Professional position. Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience. R esearch experience is highly desirable. Experience in Entomology and Plant sciences is highly preferred, as well as in viticulture, insect rearing, data collection, and data analysis. The ability to work independently, and excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills are required. The candidate must demonstrate positive human relations and effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with team members, farmers, industry representatives, and the general public. Candidates must possess proficiency in working with basic computer software such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

This position requires the operation of a motor vehicle as a part of the job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to a standard background check.

Availability: The position will be open until a suitable candidate is found. The preferred start day is July 1st, 2024.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$34,800.00 - $50,500.00
