Ithaca College MAKERSPACE AND SPECIALIZED TECHNOLOGY LAB COORDINATOR in Ithaca, New York

Job Summary:

The Makerspace and Specialized Technology Lab Coordinator will provide day to day operational guidance and leadership for various student-focused specialized technology facilities such as the IC Makerspace, Podcast Studio, Multi-Media Lab, Virtual Reality hardware, and the Esports Lounge. Responsibilities include coordinating the activities of the student employees to provide direct client support, ensuring optimal utilization of tools and technologies across the aforementioned facilities, and ensuring equipment is functioning and meets the needs of the users. Through collaboration with the Director of Engagement and Client Technologies effectively market, and align the services provided with the College’s goals.

Supervision:

The Makerspace and Specialized Technology Lab Coordinator will report to the Director of Engagement and Client Technologies within the Information Technology & Analytics division. This position does not have any direct supervision; however, this position will provide guidance and direction to student assistants (employees) assigned to the various Creative Lab locations.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide guidance and support to the student employees and clients in day-to-day operations of the Information Technology specialized lab locations, including the IC Makerspace, Podcast Studio, Multi-Media Lab, Virtual Reality hardware, and the Esports Lounge which will include assisting with general supervision and use of the tools provided within each functional area.

  • Ensure the availability of resources in the specialized lab facilities to execute the plans developed between faculty and the Center for Instructional Design & Educational Technology team that facilitate the integration of specialized lab technologies into their classroom instruction. This includes enabling student access to the facility as assigned by faculty members for their class projects.

  • Provide equipment management, machine maintenance, troubleshooting, and servicing as needed for lab equipment including the audio/video equipment, software, VR headsets, 3D printer(s), laser cutter, podcasting equipment, computers, and other hardware components within the creative lab functional areas. Work with other areas within IT&A to provide technical support as needed and appropriate.

  • Stay abreast of technology changes by researching specialized lab hardware and software additions and replacements as appropriate. Maintain adequate supply inventories and work closely with the Director of Engagement and Client Technologies to purchase supplies and replacement components as needed. Maintain budget records for the specialized facilities and provide recommendations to the Director as part of the yearly budget cycle.

  • Develop and maintain the staffing schedule for the student employees to ensure the specialized lab facilities are accessible by the general student population and faculty as needed.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Engagement and Client Technologies develop a marketing plan for the specialized lab locations and assist in the promotion of its services to the students.

  • Organize and conduct workshops, training sessions, and events that empower students, faculty and staff with the knowledge and skills to unleash their creative potential.

  • Forge collaborative partnerships with campus stakeholders and external partners to expand the specialized lab capabilities and enrich offerings that will enhance the student experience.

  • Develop and maintain assessment strategies that incorporate the ability to showcase the utilization of individual labs and technologies through dashboards and other tools. Leverage this information to evaluate the effectiveness of the programming offered based on increased utilization of the specialized lab facilities and hardware components.

  • Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful College community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative, and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

Qualifications:

Associates degree and two years of experience in the use of Makerspace and other specialized lab technologies, to include but not limited to 3D printing, podcasting, multi-media management, facilitating virtual reality engagements and providing positive client relations. Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, excellent customer Service and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with the student community in a tactful, and courteous manner are required. Alternatively, a blend of education and practical proficiency in the previously mentioned domains.

Work Environment:

Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. The incumbent will be required to operate various computers and associated computer equipment. The incumbent may need to transport various: computer equipment and can lift, pull and/or push equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.

This position is 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.
