ProMedica Health System Monitor Technician - Acute Care - Full Time - Nights in Coldwater, Michigan

ACCOUNTABILITIES All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise 1. Observes monitors as directed by assigned Registered Nurse; documents EKG strips and accurately calculates rates, PR intervals and QRS intervals at beginning of shift and as condition changes. Reports rhythms according to site origins; any life-threatening dysrhythmia to appropriate RN immediately. Mounts and labels monitor strips of patient's rhythm and places on chart.

  1. Answers and makes telephone calls to/from physicians, admitting, other hospitals or inter department as requested; relays messages-to nursing staff and physicians, as indicated. Accurately and timely transcribes physician's orders into computer and unit records.

  2. Generally, acts as the unit's communication source to provide a smooth flow for patient care, assisting nursing staff in keeping families informed of patient status with detailed information to be given by the physician or nursing. Answers patient call lights; takes and relays messages to patient, physicians, nursing staff and other employees; pages employees and physicians; keeps the unit manager, charge nurse, or supervisor informed of existing or potential problems.

  3. Gathers, prepares and/or checks file charts, records, and other documents and performs all other clerical tasks necessary for the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients in the nursing unit. Notifies appropriate parties such as admitting, housekeeping, etc., of actions taken.

  4. Maintain nurses' station including stocking appropriate supplies, unpacking, and placing supply orders in the correct location, and obtaining manager signature on purchase requisitions; assists in maintaining care areas during slow times.

  5. Receives and directs visitors using customer service principles and provides them with routine information regarding the hospital and unit's policies and procedures.

  6. Accurately and timely transcribes physician's orders into computer and unit records. Education: Must be high school graduate or equivalent. Must successfully complete ProMedica’s dysrhythmia course with 85% passing grade.

Skills: Current BCLS and other unit/hospital specific education requirements. Must have the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with a variety of hospital personnel, patients’ families, patients, physicians, and contacts outside the hospital. Extended periods of time observing monitor screen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Skills: Experience with computer order entry and knowledge of medical/technical terms

WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: As an essential job function, due to continuously changing patient census/activity and staffing needs, must have the flexibility to work varying schedule should the need arise, which may require working overtime (greater than 40 worked hours per week) and/or shift durations that exceed the assigned status for shift length and/or hours per week. Must have the ability to work under stressful situations, remain calm, keep fast pace, and maintain accuracy. Physical ability to freely move from one work area to another, to sit, walk or stand for extended periods of time which may include transporting patients, lifting binders, files, etc., and bending or reaching for stored records.
